The 7 Best Time Saving Painting Hacks
Since I have painted a lot in my day and have had tons of experience and time to get it right, I thought I would share with you my 7 best practices for painting. Getting your space to look gorgeous with these quick and simple hacks will you save you time, money & head ache, because seriously we don't have all day. I am still painting our new to us Mid-Century Modern Home built in 1959. You can also check my blog for a more detailed painting how to posts with tools for the job check list. The list below is to help you save time, money and get a beautiful result the first time you paint.
#1. BUY ALL YOUR TOOLS AND SUPPLIES YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START PAINTING.
#2. TAKE THE TIME TO PREP YOUR ROOM CORRECTLY. FILL IN HOLES, SAND IT WHEN DRY, WASH THE WALLS AND YES VACUUM AFTER SANDING ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE PETS. Be sure to remove all light plate covers and the like before washing walls and painting.
#3. IF YOU LOVE IT, COVER IT, AND COVER IT WELL. WITH 2MM PLASTIC DROP SHEETS. (Floors, Furniture & Fixtures) If you ignore this step you will be sorry, if you are using a sprayer thats another set of tips to check my blog for.
#4. TURN OFF YOUR HEATER OR AC during painting process. Use alternative heat or cooling sources to save you the head ache of re painting Seems easy enough right, if you don't and have all that great plastic covering on the floor taped to the baseboards, when the air turns on it loving blows it up like a balloon and sticks to your fresh paint. What sucks even more is when you wake up the next day and it has left a plastic impression on the wall or worse it is still stuck to the wall.
#5. WHEN YOUR DONE PAINTING AROUND TRIM REMOVE THE BLUE TAPE IMMEDIATELY WHILE PAINT IS WET. This is very important to do asap, the paint will dry to the tape and when you come back and pull it off it also pulls off paint, so irritating. Also when you remove it while wet you can remove any wet paint that might have gotten on your beautiful wooden floors and then you can wipe it up instead of it being nice and dry later.
#6. ALWAYS USE EGGSHELL ONE COAT PAINT PLUS PRIMER, THE ONE EXCEPTION IS IN THE BATHROOM. Eggshell is very forgiving and hides more of the imperfections including the ones you missed. They won't be highlight like they will be with gloss, semi gloss or satin. It also has a more professional look and feel. It also goes well with any decor. Yes this is more expensive and you should expect to spend $40 dollars a can, however you will save time, money and headache in the long run, cause I seriously painted my bathroom with 6 coats of cheap paint it took forever and was such a pain. I really wish I bought the one coat and done. Money well spent.
THE BEST TIME SAVING TIP BELOW
#7. COVER YOUR PAINT ROLLER AND PAINT TRAY WITH AND IN A PLASTIC GARBAGE BAG AND TIE IT OFF, IF YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO FINISH THE JOB AT THE MOMENT. This is my favorite tip because sometimes you just got to go and cleaning up paint right then and there might not be possible or maybe your just tired and want to go to bed. Simply get 2 garbage bags or however many you need to wrap inside each paint roller and tray. This will keep paint wet and fresh up to 2 to 3 days. Plus I hate washing out paint rollers it is such a mess. This way you can finish the job and just toss it and no messy clean up your welcome.
